The Nancy Kefauver collection houses a variety of material documenting Nancy and Estes' lives together. This material includes photos of the Kefauver family and various stages of Estes' political career (Box 4, Folders 7-17), letters and biographical sketches outlining Estes' political life (Box 1, Folders 24-28, Box 2 Folders 1-5), and information about the Art in the Embassies Program (Box 1, Folders 1-5, 7-10).

Biography / History

Nancy Piggot Kefauver was born in Scotland in 1912. Originally from New York, Nancy's father, Sir Steven Piggot, emigrated to Glasgow, Scotland to work on turbine engines for such large steam ships as the Queen Mary. Nancy's mother was a native of Tennessee and had relatives in Chattanooga. During the summer of 1934, Nancy met a young lawyer named Estes Kefauver while visiting these relatives with her sister. Nancy and Estes were married one year later in Glasgow, Scotland. Nancy studied art at Glasgow University and received practical experience in Paris and London. This schooling would later contribute to her work with the Arts in the Embassies Program, which displayed American art in overseas embassies. Nancy was in charge of this program until her unexpected death in November of 1967.
