Arrangement

Collection consists of fifteen boxes divided into two series: Alphabetical by Individual and Oversized Materials.

Biography / History

These fifteen boxes contain records, interviews, maps, newsclippings, personal letters, photographs, souvenirs and recollections of World War II and its aftermath by American servicemen and women. These include the memories of service on a submarine, as a naval aviator, fighter bomber pilot, side gunner, radio operator, paratrooper, ship's nurse, infantryman, sailor, artilleryman, engineer, medic and marine. Also included are memoirs of foreign civilians in the path of the war, and people involved in war work in the United States and Canada. There are many histories of military units and ships, and newspapers written at the various fronts. Many narratives of prisoners of war are included.

Collection Scope and Content Note

The various separate collections that compose our collective World War II Collections (see the manuscripts directory for the other WWII material) were acquired by the University of Tennessee's Center for the Study of War and Society. The Center, established by the late Dr. Charles Johnson with the cooperation of the Special Collections Library, gathered the material for the purpose of studying the effects of the war on the common soldier.

Of special interest are: a transcript of an interview with Rear Admiral Winston Folk; narratives of life as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne by Edward Laughlin; Phillip Broadhead's materials on taking over German towns as a Military Government Officer; memoirs of Graves Registration Officers, Charles D. Butte and Joseph J. Shomon; Milton Woodside's description of the Bataan death march; materials on "Exercise Tiger;" H.E. Ziegler's material on the trial of General Yamashita; and details of the prisoner of war camp at Crossville TN.
