Biography / History
Lauriston S. Taylor was born on June 1, 1902 in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his A.B. from Cornell University in 1926, a D.Sc. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1960, and a D.Sc. from St. Procopius College in 1965. He also completed postgraduate work at Columbia University in 1930 and at Cornell University in 1931. Taylor began working for the National Bureau of Standards in 1927. He eventually earned a number of leadership positions in this organization, including chief of the X-ray section (1940-1949), chief of the proving grounds section (1941-1942), assistant chief of the ordnance development division (1942-1943), assistant chief of the optics (later the atomic physics) division (1948-1951), chief of the Radiation Physical Laboratory (1949-1951), chief of the atomic and radiation physics division (1951-1960), and chief of the radiation physics division (1960-1962). He also served as a consultant to the U.S. government on several occasions. Taylor died on November 26, 2004 in Maryland.
Taylor married Azulah Frances Walker (d. 1972) on December 28, 1925 and the couple had two children: Lauriston Sale (d. 1992) and Nelson Walker Taylor.
