Biography / History

James Gordon Carlson was bon in Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, on January 24, 1908. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his B.A. in 1930 and his Ph.D. in 1935. He taught at Bryn Mawr College (1930-1935) and at the University of Alabama (1935-1946) and worked as the senior biologist for the National Institute of Health (1946-1947) before coming to the University of Tennessee as head of the Department of Zoology and Entomology in 1947. He surrendered his administrative duties in order to devote his full attention to teaching in 1967, and continued to teach until his retirement in 1978. While at UT, Carlson also served as the Director of the Institute of Radiation Biology from 1955 until 1972. He died on December 17, 2001 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
