Biography / History
Born in Cleveland, Ohio of English parents from Hereford, England, Watkins served in the Ohio 19th Battery from Cleveland and was among Federal troops who fought in the Battle of Fort Sanders.
Collection Scope and Content Note
This collection contains part of a letter written by Corporal John Watkins during the Civil War. It is undated and accompanied by a poem entitled "The Union," which reads in part "The Union! The Union. The hope of the free/However we may differ, it's on this we will agree." Also in the collection is a note written on United States Sanitary Commission stationary and relatively modern black and white photograph picturing two unnamed subjects.
