Biography / History

Dr. Farrington Daniels Jr., Professor of Medicine and Head, Division of Dermatology, The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, has researched, written, advised and promoted the integrity of Photobiology, Radiation, and the Ozone Layer. The assessment of scientific information on how human activities may affect the stratosphere, in particular the ozone layer; and on how changes in the stratosphere, especially the ozone concentration or depletion, may affaect human health and welfare, is one of the primary objectives of Dr. Daniels' work.

Collection Scope and Content Note

In the 60's a nameless group of medical photobiologists met several times, preceding the formation of the American Society for Photobiology. In one of our letters, written by Dr. Daniels, he recalls some incidents which occured at the Cornell meeting in 1965. "Art Norris demonstrating electron spin with two grapefruit and two pencils, and Harvey Blank showed a picture of a sun-screen test which he identified as being done on a rabbit named Harvey."

The state of knowledge in the fields of Ozone Depletion and the effects of Increased Solar Ultraviolet Radiation rapidly increased (or developed) as the meetings continued, committees formed, and instructive legislature was passed. We have a copy of the Congressional Record, 1971, on the SST debate and an update on The Clean Air Act, amended 1977.

The radiation research has increased quantitative predictions and intensified international awareness of our problem in understanding the biological systems

There are three boxes in this collection, filed in chronological order, from a MSS of 1953, Aero Methods laboratory, Academy of Sciences, U.S.S.R., E.L. Krinov, to correspondence in the 80's. One box has tapes and cassettes also filed in chronological order, from the 50's to the 80's
