Biography / History

John Shrady was a surgeon from New York City, or its environs, who was stationed in East Tennessee from late 1863 until the autumn of 1864. He served as surgeon to the 2nd East Tennessee Infantry in Clinton, Tennessee and afterward served in two different hospitals in Knoxville, Tennessee: Asylum U.S.A. General Hospital and Holston U.S.A. General Hospital. His term of service ended in October of 1864.

Collection Scope and Content Note

There are 13 letters in this collection. The first is dated December 25, 1863. The final letter is dated October 8, 1864. The letters deal primarily with reporting Dr. Shrady's daily activities and general news to his wife. He also discusses plans for being discharged from the service in the latter half of 1864. He often expresses his wishes to return home and encourages his wife to get plenty of exercise and take advantage of recreational activities whenever she can. Occasionally, Dr. Shrady mentions a prominent figure from the American Civil War, e.g. General William T. Sherman or General Joseph Wheeler. These references, however, are minimal in these 13 letters.
