Arrangement

Collection consists of two boxes divided into three series:

Biography / History

Willis Carleton Tucker was born on March 14, 1907 in Beckley, West Virginia. He earned his A.B. in Journalism from West Virginia Tech in 1930 and his M.A. in Journalism and Political Science from West Virginia University in 1931. He completed further graduate work at Ohio State University and at the University of Southern California. Tucker worked for several newspapers and taught at Marshall University and the University of Kentucky before coming to the University of Tennessee to head the fledgling Department of Journalism in 1947. Under his guidance, the department grew quickly and was accredited as a School of Journalism in 1959. Tucker stepped down as department head in 1972 to return to full-time teaching. He died in Wichita, Kansas on November 23, 2001.


Collection Scope and Content Note

Box 1 houses correspondence and other materials related to the UT-TPA Press Institute and the Industrial Editing Institute. Box 2 contains information documenting the development of the University of Tennessee's School of Journalism, including records of academic standards, class schedules, and majors and minors offered. Box 2 also contains various correspondence of W.C. Tucker and other materials relating to journalism.
