Biography / History

When the Civil War began in 1860, the Bogle and Saffell families were living in Blount and Roane counties, Tennessee. At the center of the group were John and Elizabeth Saffell Bogle, who had married in about 1857. Elizabeth's unmarried sister, Sarah Saffell, lived with the couple at their home in Maryville. Elizabeth and Sarah's brothers, Sam and Richard "Dick" Saffell, both farmed in nearby Roane County. Sam lived with his wife, Melissa, and their young son, John.

Both Dick and Sam Saffell served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Dick Saffell joined the 26th Tennessee Infantry (also called the 3rd East Tennessee Volunteers) in 1861. Most of the unit, including Saffell, were captured at Fort Donelson on February 16, 1862. After the prisoners were exchanged later in 1862, the unit participated in the Murfreesboro and Atlanta campaigns. Dick Saffell was killed in March of 1865 during the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina. Sam Saffell joined the 63rd Tennessee Infantry in about 1862. He was killed on June 27, 1864 during the Petersburg Campaign.
