Biography / History

Lee Seifert Greene was born in Esbon, Kansas on May 31, 1905. He was educated first at the University of Kansas, where he earned his B.M. degree in 1927 and his A.B. degree in 1930. He studied at the University of Leipzig as a German-American exchange fellow in 1931, after which he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin. Here, he earned his A.M. degree (1932) and Ph.D. (1934). After graduation, Greene completed postgraduate work at the Brookings Institution (1934) and at the University of Michigan (1935).

In 1936, Greene began working with the Tennessee Valley Authority as a research associate and supervisor of public administration. He held this post until 1937, when he began teaching in the University of Tennessee's Political Science Department. Over the next 49 years, Greene held a number of positions in this department, including lecturer (1937), assistant professor (1938-1939), associate professor (1939-1945), professor (1945-1986), distinguished professor (1965-1975), acting department head (1942-1946) and department head (1946-1971). He retired from the University in 1975, and died on October 18, 1986.

Greene authored a number of books, including Administration of Natural Resources in Tennessee (with V.H. Brown and Evan A. Iverson; 1948), A Future For Nashville (with D.R. Grant, 1952), Metropolitan Harris County (1957), Government in Tennessee (with R.S. Avery, 1962), American Government: Policies and Functions (1967), American Government: Theory, Structure, and Process (with Dye and Parthemos, 1969), Governing the American Democracy (1980), Lead Me On: Frank Goad Clement and Tennessee Politics (1982) and History of the University of Tennessee (with Folmsbee and Montgomery, 1984). Greene also edited a number of other publications.

Collection Scope and Content Note

Dr. Greene assembled copies of more than two thousand items from the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville during the course of his research. The manuscript that he prepared from his research data is accompanied by synopses of chapters and rough drafts of text. In addition to the written and printed materials in this collection, Dr. Greene has donated cassette tapes of the numerous interviews with the family, friends, and colleagues of Frank Clement that he conducted to serve as the primary sources in his biography.

Boxes 1-5 are devoted to research material, with the exception of Box 4 which contains correspondence files (additional correspondence files appear in Box 10). The first draft of the manuscript and chapter synopses of Lead Me On can be found in Boxes 6 and 7, and are followed by interviews with Clement's family and associates in Boxes 7 and 8. Box 9 contains the proofs, galley proofs, illustrative material, etc., used in Lead Me On, as well as the permission files for access to taped interviews with Clement associates. Box 10 contains additional correspondence concerning Dr. Greene's Clement project. Boxes 10 and 11 house extra copies of the Clement manuscript and reviews of Lead Me On.
