Biography / History

Don Whitehead was born on April 8, 1908 in Inman, Virginia, but was raised in Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky. He started his journalistic career in 1928 working for newspapers in La Follette and Harlan, Kentucky. His career with the Associated Press started in 1935. Whitehead earned much respect as a journalist while covering the Second World War and Korean War for the Associated Press, an organization he represented the Korean War. Following his war experiences, Mr. Whitehead wrote several books, including the bestseller The FBI Story , and also worked for the New York Herald Tribune. In the latter years of his career he continued writing books and was a regular columnist for the Knoxville News-Sentinel . Married for over 50 years to his wife, Marie, he was the father of one daughter, Ruth. He wrote actively until shortly before his death on January 12, 1981 at age 72.
