Biography / History

James B. Frazier Sr. was born on October 18, 1856 in Pikeville (Bledsoe County) Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1878 and then read law in Nashville, Tennessee. He was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1881, after which he began practicing law in Chattanooga. He served as governor of Tennessee from 1903 until 1905, when he was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William B. Bate. He served in the Senate until 1911, when he returned to Chattanooga and resumed his legal career. Frazier died on March 28, 1937 in Chattanooga.

James B. Frazier, Jr. was born on June 23, 1890 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1914, he graduated from the Chattanooga College of Law and was admitted to the Tennessee bar. He volunteered for service in the First World War in 1917 and was discharged as a major in 1919, after which he returned to Chattanooga and resumed his legal career. Frazier was appointed the United States attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee in 1933 and served until 1948. In 1949, he was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served until 1963. Frazier died in Chattanooga on October 30, 1978.

James B. Frazier, Sr. and James B. Frazier Jr. founded the law firm of Frazier and Frazier in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There is some controversy surrounding the year that this firm was established: estimates range from 1911 to 1919.
