David James Harkness was born on April 19, 1913 in Jellico, Tennessee. He arrived in Knoxville in 1947 and worked in the University of Tennessee's Extension division as the director of program planning and library services. He was also a prolific literary writer and authored a weekly column for the Knoxville News-Sentinel . He died on October 9, 2004 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
