Biography / History

William Blount, then governor of the Territory South of the River Ohio, created Knox County from parts of Greene and Hawkins Counties on June 11, 1792. Knoxville, founded by James White in 1786, has been the county seat since the County's creation. Knoxville also served as the capital of Tennessee from 1796 to 1812 and again from 1817 to 1818. Today, Knox County occupies 509 square miles and lies in the middle of East Tennessee's Great Valley.
