Biography / History

John Jennings Jr. was born to John and Julia Forrester Jennings on June 6, 1880 in Harriman, Tennessee. He studied law at the American Temperance University from 1898 to 1900 and was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 1903. In 1906, he earned his B.S. degree from Grant University. After his admission to the Bar, he began practicing law in Jellico, Tennessee. At various times in his professional life, he served as the Campbell County Superintendent of Public Instruction (1903-1904), Campbell County Attorney (1911-1918), Special Assistant to the Attorney General of the United States (1918-1919), and Judge in Tennessee's second chancery division (1918-1923). Jennings moved to Knoxville in 1923, where he continued to practice law. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1939 to fill the vacancy caused by James Willis Taylor's death on November 14, 1939. Jennings continued to serve until 1950. He died in Knoxville, Tennessee on February 27, 1956.
