Biography / History

Nellie Kenyon was born in Lexington, Kentucky on November 28, 1895. Although she had little formal education in her youth, she spent most of her professional life writing for such Tennessee newspapers as The Nashville Tennesseean and The Chattanooga News. Her work dealt primarily with federal trials. These stories include her coverage of the Scopes Monkey Trial in July of 1925, her exposure of a baby selling operation in Memphis (which obtained infants under questionable circumstances and placed them in adoptive homes, including the homes of Hollywood movie stars, for a large fee) in 1950, and her coverage of the Jimmy Hoffa trial in January of 1964. Even after her official retirement in 1970, Kenyon continued to write occasionally on special assignments. She died in February of 1982.
