Collection Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of four ledger books that contain property and pension claims by East Tennesseeans following the Civil War. The type of claims vary. On July 1, 1876, William Whitcotton "makes claim for services rendered as nurse in W.S Smallpox Hospital, at Knoxville, Tennessee." There are many appications for removal of "suspension of pension" by ex-confederates and Southern Veterans of American wars, dating back to the War of 1812. One of the pension claims reads: "Jefferson R. Gentry, gerad Jacob C. Gentry, an insane man, late pvt. Co C 2nd Tennessee Cav, makes application for pension." There are also claims against the Union army for "hog stealing" and other "contraband" appropiated without compensation by the federal Army.
