Biography / History
Bernadotte Everly Schmitt was born on May 19, 1886 in Strasburg, Virginia. Raised primarily in Knoxville, Schmitt attended the prestigious Baker-Himel School before continuing on to the University of Tennessee. He earned his B.A. from this institution in 1904. He was selected as a Rhodes scholar in 1905 and went to England to study at Merton College at Oxford University. Here, he earned a B.A. (1908) and M.A. (1913). During his time at Oxford, he developed an interest in modern German history. After returning to the United States, he pursued this interest at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his Ph.D in 1910.
During his teaching career, Schmitt worked primarily at Western Reserve University (1910-1925) and at the University of Chicago (1925-1946). He also wrote a number of books, including England and Germany, 1740-1914 (1916), The Coming of the War: 1914 (1930), Triple Alliance and Triple Entente (1934), The Annexation of Bosnia, 1908-1909 (1937), and From Versailles to Munich, 1918-1938 (1938). This distinguished career brought him a number of awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1927), a Pulitzer Prize in History (awarded for The Coming of the War: 1914 ), a George Louis Beer Prize (also awarded for The Coming of the War: 1914 ), and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
