Biography / History

James Park Sr. was born on April 14, 1770 in Donegal, Ireland to Robert Park and Nancy Aiken. He emigrated to the United States in about 1799 and settled in Knoxville, Tennessee. Here, he became a pioneering merchant and businessman. He died on September 19, 1853.

James Park Jr. was the eleventh of James and Sophia Moody Park's twelve children. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 18, 1822. He graduated from East Tennessee College (now the University of Tennessee) in 1840 and again from Princeton Theological Seminary in May of 1846. He began his ministerial career in October of 1846, when he was licensed at Bakers Creek Presbyterian Church. He married Phoebe C. Alexander in May of 1848, and the couple had nine children. Park served the Presbyterian church until 1905, when he requested that he be relieved due to declining health. He died in Knoxville on July 14, 1912.

Says he will not be available for employment by the board to represent it before the Supreme Court because he will not be in Washington at that time.
