Biography / History

One of the oldest counties in East Tennessee, Rhea County was partitioned from Roane County by an act of the general assembly on December 3, 1807. Its county seat was established in Washington in 1812, and the city remained a center for political and commercial life until the Cincinnati Southern Railway bypassed it in the 1880s. As Washington shrunk, Dayton emerged as a major industrial center. Dayton became internationally famous in 1925, when it was the site of the Scopes Trial. Today, Rhea county remains a major East Tennessee manufacturing and industrial center.
