Biography / History

Major Charles G. Davis enlisted in Company C, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, September 4, 1861. He was mustered into service September 16th, and made Sergeant on September 17th. He was later promoted while in service to Major.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This is a copy of a manuscript by Charles G. Davis. It is his first-person story of being a union soldier imprisoned who escaped during the Civil War. He escaped with four other men, and they traveled on foot for thirty-one days behind Confederate lines to Knoxville, Tennessee.
