Biography / History

Samuel Houston was born in Virginia in 1793. He lived in Tennessee, relating to the native Cherokees, of whom he would become a strong supporter. In 1823, he served in congress, and later moved onto state governor. He was married briefly in 1829. Following Andrew Jackson's orders in 1832, he went to Texas to be a representative for native Indian relations. In 1836, the War for Mexican Independence broke out, and after the battle at Alamo, Houston defeated Santa Anna's Mexican Army.

Houston played a significant role in Texas being admitted to the Union in 1845. He remained in the state, where he was elected governor in 1860. Shortly after, he was removed from office for disloyalties which were related to the Civil War--Houston did not support the Confederacy and secession from the Union. He was simply pro-Texas. Houston died in 1863.
