Biography / History

St. George Leakin Sioussat was born to Albert Willis and Annie Middleton Leakin Sioussat in Baltimore, Maryland on March 13, 1878. He was educated at Johns Hopkins University, graduating with his A.B. in 1896 and Ph.D. in 1899. He also held an honorary Doctor of Letters, which was conferred by Lehigh University in 1947. Sioussat taught history and economics at a number of colleges and universities, including Smith College (1899-1904), the University of the South (1904-1911), Vanderbilt University (1911-1917), Brown University (1917-1920), and the University of Pennsylvania (1920-1938). After leaving the University of Pennsylvania, he became the Chief of the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress, a position he held from 1938 until his retirement in 1948. After his retirement, he continued to serve the Library of Congress as an honorary consultant in American historiography until his death.

Sioussat was married twice. His first marriage was to Alma Dailey Cleveland (1878-1929) on December 19, 1906. After her death, he married Julia T. Richardson (1919-1967) on December 21, 1940. Sioussat died at his home in Washington, DC at the age of 82 on August 31, 1960.
