John Haywood was a pioneer jurist and scholar of early Tennessee history. He was born in Halifax County, NC, in 1762. After achieving success in the legal field in North Carolina, Haywood and his family moved to Davidson County, TN, where he built a home called Tusculum just south of Nashville. In 1816, he was appointed to the Tennessee Supreme Court of Errors and Appeals, a position he held until his death in 1826.

Two of Haywood's best known works are his histories of Tennessee. Published in 1823, The Natural and Aboriginal History of Tennessee attempted to prove that the Native American tribes of Tennessee were descended from the ancient Hebrews. Civil and Political History of the State of Tennessee, also published in 1823, was a history of the region from prehistoric times through statehood.
