Title: Joseph Smith Fowler Autobiography
Abstract: This collection consists of a Xerox copy of Joseph Smith Fowler's autobiography. It describes his early life and education, his political activity during the Civil War (including his service as the comptroller of Tennessee under Andrew Johnson and his participation in the Southern Union Convention), his post-war service in the United States Senate, and his observations on the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. The manuscript also details Fowler's political stance and his opinions on numerous political matters.

Title: Margaret Barton Crozier Ramsey Diary
Abstract: Margaret Barton Crozier Ramsey kept this diary while she was in exile in North Carolina during and shortly after the Civil War. In it, she describes the destruction of her home in Tennessee, her journey to and life in North Carolina, the churches she attended, her religious views, her homesickness for her life in Tennessee, and her feelings toward the Union Army. She also relates family news, including news of her sons and other family members serving in the Confederate Army.

Abstract: The papers of Dr. Ayres consist of miscellaneous files found in the James D. Hoskins Collection. Two items of interest in the collection are the accusations made against Prof. Schaeffer in 1916 and the Rhodes Scholarship folders from 1906-1912. Dr. Ayres was Chairman of the Committee for Tennessee for Rhodes Scholars.

The book was Vol. IV of Gayley's Representative English Comedies. The second book whose galleys or printers proofs are in the collection is Thaler's Shakespeare and Democracy.

Title: William Randolph Hackley Letters
Abstract: This collection consists of 43 letters from William Randolph Hackley to his wife and family in Illinois written from 1863-1866. During this time, he worked as a local special agent and cotton agent with the United States Department of the Treasury in West Tennessee and Mississippi. The correspondence describes Hackley's efforts to make money to send home to his family, the low salary paid to treasury employees, the corrupt nature of the Treasury Department, and the cynicism of government workers. The letters also demonstrate Hackley's homesickness and love for his family.
