Abstract: This is a collection of sixty-one Civil War letters written by William A. Huddard to his father. The letters begin in June of 1861 and end in April of 1864. Title: William Derris Slide Collection
Abstract: The Derris Slide Collection is solely composed of approximately 4400 slides from the 1940's thru the 1960's of the Great Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee. Mr. William Derris was an amateur photographer and owner of the Derris Motel (later the Laughing Horse Inn) in Townsend, Tennessee, which he photographed at length and used the slides of those photographs in a slide show for the entertainment of his Inn's numerous and varied guests.

Title: A. Randolph Shields Collection
Abstract: This collection contains slide photography of the Great Smoky Mountains region and the Arizona desert, professional association membership information, professional research, writing and publications proofs, Shields family genealogical information, and personal correspondence. The collection is contained within seven archival storage boxes and a single archival tube. The original organizational patterns have been maintained wherever possible, including titles of folders and notebooks and the alphabetical categorization of the slides. The personal/general correspondence has been chronologically organized, as there was no observable organization upon assessment of the collection. Shields marked the majority of the slides, but these identifiers are not noted within this finding aid.

Abstract: The Milton Weaver Collection contains a number of letters dating from the American Civil War describing in detail Union military camp conditions and drills, the environment of Tennessee, military operations in Middle Tennessee and Georgia (including Nashville, Stones River, Chattanooga, and Sherman's campaign in Georgia), opinions about Confederates and Copperheads, family life during the war, and the emotional trauma of conflict. The collection also includes several poems written by Milton Weaver's father, Richard, and a tintype of Milton Weaver in his Union uniform.

Abstract: Collection contains a letter dated November 14, 1861, by Lieutenant William R. Lacy of the 6th Tennessee Infantry (C.S.A.) to his cousin, Amarila Lemons. Written from Columbus, Ky., he describes the rules and conditions placed on a soldier in the areas of Belmont, Missouri and Columbus. The letter includes an explanation of the treatment of prisoners. Lacy speaks of the wounded and the Union dead. He adds that a cousin, Thomas Lacy resigned and became a Captain of a company at Union City.

In this letter dated June 4, 1862, he describes the fortifications that are in place to protect them from the Confederates. His company moves toward the Confederate camps and skirmishes occur.

Abstract: This collection is composed of a letter that William Cosgrove of the 1st Ohio Light Artillery Regiment, Battery G, wrote to his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Bowers, in Mount Vernon (Knox County) Ohio from Nashville, Tennessee on January 31, 1864. He writes of cousin Charles's death in Memphis and his own Battery's move to Nashville. Also, he speaks of conditions in camp, including a recent outbreak of smallpox and his personal troubles with rheumatism.

Abstract: H. L. Bedford's memoir provides a detailed account of the placement and use of Confederate artillery at Fort Donelson. The memoir disagrees with Union reports included in the Official Records and rehabilitates the reputation of Confederate troops and commanders at the fort. Bedford was an adjutant in the Tennessee Corps of Artillery.

Abstract: This collection contains photocopies of the diary of Charles W. Clarke. The diary entries date October 21, 1897 thru November 5, 1898, and March 1, 1901 thru April 27, 1902. Clarke's entries cover life at Ruskin from July 1, 1898 thru November 5, 1908. The rest of the journal was maintained while in Fairhope, AL, where some members of the Ruskin Commune moved.

Abstract: The Durham Coal & Iron Co. Records, 1906-1929, contains a report by W.F.B. Berger on March 6, 1929, with a detailed evaluation of the Chattanoogan mines, timber reserves, and their values, as well as of the geology of the company properties. Included are several past reports from 1926 thru 1928. Blueprints and a digest of Berger's report were found loose in the report and are listed as separate items in a separate folder.
